To simplify the Nissan 4x4 range structure the grade names of TREK, SPORT and AVENTURA for X-TRAIL have been taken from the Pathfinder.

Although X-TRAIL has been completely restyled, customer research clearly showed that the robust, strong shape was popular and well appreciated. Indeed, it was a key factor in the decision making process for many buyers. It was clear that the “X-TRAILness” had to be retained, which is why there is a clear family resemblance between the original and the new version – a perfect example of evolutionary change.

New from the ground up, the latest X-TRAIL shares the same platform as the recently launched QASHQAI. The platform features strut-type suspension at the front with a multi-link system at the rear, both ends being mounted on separate rubber insulated sub-frames providing enhanced refinement and isolation from vibrations which in turn gives a superior ride both on and off-road.

As a result, new X-TRAIL is slightly larger than before: its wheelbase has increased by 5mm to 2630mm, while overall length has risen by 175mm to 4630mm. Much of this extra length can be found in the luggage area, which has increased dramatically in size.

With the rear seat in place, the original vehicle had a luggage area VDA measurement of 410 litres up to the lower edge of the rear window: in the new X-TRAIL the equivalent figure is 603 litres, an increase of 193 litres (including double deck trunk capacity). Fold the rear seats forward and this increases to 1773 litres.

This has been achieved by rerouting the exhaust silencer from its original transverse position under the boot floor to a north/south location alongside the rear wheel well. This has allowed the creation of an innovative double deck trunk, with space for a sliding drawer under the floor where valuable items can be stored away from prying eyes.

The drawer has partition walls that can be placed in a number of different positions or removed altogether as required. The floor and the drawer can both be removed to increase load space even further: as a result the trunk area of the new X-TRAIL is deeper and wider than the original and, even with the false floor in place, virtually as tall. With it removed, trunk height is increased by 127mm over the original.

But that’s not all. To ensure maximum practicality, the floor has been finished in a tough and easy-to-clean non-slip plastic surface. Raised ribs have been placed at unequal distances apart to help prevent loads shifting when the vehicle is on the move. Full carpeting was rejected for the trunk as customer research showed that many owners either carried dogs or outdoor sports equipment in the rear of their X-TRAIL and preferred a wipe clean surface.

The interior improvements continue with Nissan’s practice of providing much higher levels of quality and premiumness than expected for the class of car. Soft feel materials feature on all touch points throughout the cockpit. And as with other recent Nissan models, X-TRAIL has been created with versatility and practicality uppermost.

Positioning the instrument cluster behind the multi-function steering wheel has allowed greater versatility in the centre console, which can now house a larger navigation screen closer to eye level as well as providing space for an in-dash multi disc CD changer.

For the first time, X-TRAIL offers two levels of turbo-diesel power. Both engines are versions of the highly regarded 2.0-litre M1D unit already fitted in QASHQAI which combines high outputs and good economy with class-leading refinement. The 150PS is available on all grades and returns a combined fuel consumption figure of 39.8mpg and 190g/km of CO2 . Compare the fuel economy and CO2 with the out-going 2.2dCi 136PS engine (37.2mpg/ 203g/km CO2) and improvements made are 6.9% and 6.4% respectively.

With the help of an intercooler comes the second version producing 173PS available on the SPORT and AVENTURA. Fuel economy using the combined cycle is 38.2mpg with an output of 198g/km CO2.

Torque outputs for both versions are 320Nm and 360Nm respectively, 90 per cent of which is developed at a low 1750rpm. These engines are also fitted with particulate filters to minimise emissions.

The 173PS engine should also prove to be popular with the towing fraternity as it has a class leading maximum braked trailer weight of 2200kg.

A new lightweight all-alloy 16 valve 2.0-litre petrol engine producing 141PS and 196Nm of torque is fitted to the TREK. It was development led by Nissan and unusually for a petrol engine, much of the torque is produced low down the rev band – 90 per cent is available from 2400rpm. It returns a combined fuel consumption figure of 32.5mpg and has a CO2 figure of 208g/km.

Although carried over from the original X-TRAIL, the 2.5-litre 169PS petrol engine has been further improved for greater refinement and better efficiency. Providing excellent low-to mid-range torque figures – peak torque is 233Nm – the engine comes on both the SPORT and AVENTURA grades and produces 29.4mpg and 230g/km of CO2.

All engines are fitted with six speed manual transmissions but if you would rather give your left foot a rest then there is now a choice of automatics on both diesel and petrol versions. The 2.5 petrol has the latest fuel efficient constantly variable transmission (CVT) costing an additional £1200 with lower fuel consumption and CO2 than the equivalent manual – returning 30.4mpg and 223g/km CO2. The 150PS diesel has the option of a conventional 6 speed automatic. The higher powered diesel is only available in manual form.

TREK may be the first in the line up but it is not short on equipment with Bluetooth phone integration, 16" alloy wheels, full body coloured bumpers, climate controlled air conditioning, a full suite of airbags – driver, passenger, side and curtain, plus a CD / radio with 4 speakers.

The SPORT version encompasses all of TREK’s equipment but the alloys change to a larger 17", the stereo system is upgraded to a 6 stack CD auto-changer with 6 speakers and remote control, the front grille gets a chrome look and front fog lamps are also added, along with a large panoramic sunroof, privacy glass, cruise control, reach adjust steering and a ski hatch. Include auto-on for the headlamps, wipers and speed activated central locking, then the package is complete.

The AVENTURA offers a choice of either Black or Sand coloured leather upholstery, heated and powered front seats, intelligent key and electric folding door mirrors with chrome exterior door handles.

All X-TRAILs are equipped with Nissan’s ALL-MODE 4x4 system which operates in two-wheel drive only to minimise fuel consumption and transfers into four-wheel drive mode as and when the vehicle detects it is needed, or manually selected by the driver. The SPORT and AVENTURA on the new X-TRAIL however get the very latest intelligent edition known as ALL-MODE 4x4-i incorporating Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Uphill Start Support (USS) and Downhill Drive Support (DDS).

USS is a fully automatic system that activates on any slope that exceeds a 10 per cent incline, holding the vehicle on the brakes until the driver starts to move away. The system also works if the vehicle is reversing up an incline.

DDS – operated via a switch on the centre console – operates when ALL-MODE is in lock mode. DDS uses the anti-lock brakes to maintain a descent speed of 5mph allowing the driver to concentrate on steering. Like USS, DDS also works when the vehicle is in reverse.

On SPORT and AVENTURA grades there are upgrade models available to further enhance the specification list. The SPORT eXpedition includes DVD satellite navigation, rear parking camera, intelligent key and chrome exterior door handles. The AVENTURA eXplorer has the same price increase but adds xenon powered headlamps, DVD satellite navigation and rear parking camera. eXtreme is the second upgrade on both SPORT and AVENTURA which adds stylish roof rails with integrated lamps.

Porsche GT3 RS @ Goodwood Review

Visitors to the 2007 Goodwood Festival of Speed will for the first time be able to experience the performance and handling of the second generation Porsche Cayenne on a specially-designed circuit located next to the famous speed hillclimb course. The driver-oriented chassis of the Porsche Cayenne has been designed to combine sports car handling on the road with the added versatility of extreme agility off-road. The grass-surfaced course, around which the 385bhp V8-engined Cayenne S models will power, is intended to demonstrate perfectly the outstanding dynamic ability of the four door Porsche.

Rides in the all-wheel drive Porsche Cayenne S will be available in exchange for a donation to the Teenage Cancer Trust. Members of the public will be able to jump into the passenger seat alongside a Driving Consultant from the Porsche Driving Experience, and enjoy an exciting high speed run.

Epitomising the breadth of ability of the Porsche Cayenne is the special Transsyberia edition that will be on display at Goodwood. Based on the new Cayenne S, this sporting derivative makes its competition debut in the Transsyberia Rallye taking contestants over 4,000 miles from Moscow through Siberia to Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia from 2 – 17 August 2007.

The two highest performing models in the 911 range will be participating in the ‘Sunday Times’ Supercar Run up the hillclimb course, a high-octane display of horsepower that celebrates the ultimate in performance road car engineering. The 415bhp Porsche 911 GT3 RS makes its debut at the Sussex venue, alongside the 480bhp four wheel-drive Porsche 911 Turbo.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed each year has a central motor sporting theme and for 2007 it is ‘Spark of Genius – Breaking Records, Pushing Boundaries’. And if ever there was a marque for whom this sentiment was particularly appropriate, it is Porsche – with 16 victories at Le Mans just one of the company’s impressive records.

Manufacturers and private owners are invited to demonstrate cars of historical significance relating to the motor sporting disciplines celebrated. Sports car and endurance racing plays a major part in this year’s Festival, and given the unparalleled achievements by Porsche in this field, the world-renowned Porsche Museum team from Stuttgart is showcasing three ground-breaking cars from its past – the 1973 917/30, the 1977 ‘Baby’ 935, and the 1986 962.

However, threatening to steal the limelight from these classics will be the 2007 RS Spyder from the Porsche Motorsport headquarters in Wiessach, making its European public debut. Designed for competition in the ultra-competitive American Le Mans Series (ALMS) Championship across the Atlantic, the RS Spyder won the LMP2 class in the 2006 ALMS, and currently heads the category this season following three outright wins. Driving the RS Spyder at Goodwood is German ace Timo Bernhard, who leads the LMP2 Driver’s Championship in the ALMS.

A further unique feature of Goodwood is that the event seeks to reunite famous cars with drivers from the original factory teams. This year sees a star-studded line-up of former factory Porsche drivers behind the wheel of Stuttgart race cars once again. Derek Bell, five times winner of Le Mans and former factory Porsche driver will be driving the 1973 917/30 alongside fellow sportscar legend Jochen Mass; Vern Schuppan, 1983 Le Mans winner for Porsche, will be reunited with a 962C from 1986 and will also drive the 1977 935 ‘Baby’.

Porsche enthusiasts visiting Goodwood will be pleased to learn that there are many more examples of the marque, and former factory race drivers, participating in the Festival of Speed. These will include; Richard Attwood, winner of Le Mans with Porsche in 1970 in the fearsome 917; Vic Elford, winner of the 1968 Targa Florio; Brian Redman, 1970 Targa Florio winner for Porsche; and Allan McNish, winner of the 1998 Le Mans with the Porsche factory team.

And for visitors wishing to re-fuel themselves, the Porsche Café Le Mans will be once more situated on the outside of the track near the footbridge, offering meals and refreshments.

Hummer H3 Assembly in South Africa Review

General Motors today celebrated the start of production of the HUMMER H3 at its Struandale Assembly Facility in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The occasion represents an important step in the global expansion of HUMMER by providing increased capacity and a global version of the H3 for markets outside North America.

Maureen Kempston Darkes, president of GM Latin America, Africa and the Middle East said, "The GM team in South Africa has demonstrated to the world that they have the people, the leadership, the technology and the skills to execute the type of automobile engineering and assembly that is required in the new global economy."

Edward Welburn, GM's vice president of Global Design said, "HUMMER's iconic design and unparalleled off-road performance are already recognized around the world. A global version and international assembly of the H3 are the next logical step for HUMMER to expand globally."Until recently, HUMMER had primarily focused its attention on establishing a strong presence in North America. GM acquired the brand in late 1999 and since then HUMMER has grown from a brand selling roughly 1,000 vehicles per year in 2000 to more than 60,000 in 2005. In fact, HUMMER sales nearly doubled globally in 2005, paced by the launch of the midsize H3. While much of this growth was in the United States, HUMMER also saw significant expansion in more countries around the globe.

"The HUMMER H3 continues to have a significant impact on the awareness and sales performance of the brand globally," said Martin Walsh, General Manager of HUMMER. "With the assembly of HUMMER H3 in South Africa, we take the next important step to grow the HUMMER brand around the world."HUMMER H3 vehicles built in South Africa will be exported to markets in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Production of a right-hand drive version will begin in the second quarter of 2007 for export into right-hand markets in Europe and Asia as well as for local sale in South Africa.

GM announced the $100 million investment in its South African operations last year. Robert Socia, president and managing director of GM South Africa described the project as, "one of the most important milestones in the history of GM in South Africa." He said, "It's significant that GM chose to place the H3 contract with South Africa as it says a lot about the confidence GM has in our ability to deliver."The H3 is an authentic HUMMER, offering the brand's iconic design and famed off-road capability in a midsize and more accessible package. The South African-built H3 will be available with a new 242 horsepower (180 KW) Vortec inline 5-cylinder engine, choice of manual or automatic transmissions, and a premium, full-time four-wheel-drive system. A right-hand drive version will be available in 2007.

Ford Shelby GT Convertible Review

The magic duo of Ford Mustang and Carroll Shelby bring open-air excitement to the road for the 2008 model year as the Ford Shelby GT returns with a new convertible body style and a new standard color combination. Like all Shelby Mustang models, production will be limited to assure exclusivity for collectors. The 2008 Shelby GT coupe and convertible will be available from select Ford dealers beginning in August 2007.

The 2008 Ford Shelby GT convertible is being formally introduced to Shelby and Ford enthusiasts at the annual Mid-America Ford Performance and Shelby Meet, which opens today in Tulsa, Okla.

“The Shelby GT was engineered for people that put performance first,” said Carroll Shelby. “Working with Ford Racing, we created this Shelby to be an everyday driver that’s tuned for fun at the track. Those who value a well-balanced package will appreciate it. Those who don’t will be left behind staring at its tailpipes.”

In 2007, Ford Division, Carroll Shelby and Ford Racing joined forces to create a retail version of The Hertz Corporation Shelby GT-H coupe called the Ford Shelby GT. Fewer than 6,000 2007 models were built and all were available only in Performance White or Black.

For 2008, the highly-coveted Shelby GT is available in a new paint combination of Vista Blue with Silver stripes and the choice of two body styles, coupe or convertible.

“The Mustang convertible is the number one selling convertible in the U.S.,” states Robert Parker, Ford Division Car Marketing Manager. “Since t he Mustang program never stands still, we wanted to continue offering consumers what they want, and they told us it was a Ford Mustang Shelby GT convertible. ”Shelby GT models begin life as a specially-equipped Mustang GT assembled at the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Mich. The cars are then shipped to the Shelby Automobiles facility in Las Vegas for transformation before delivery to Ford dealerships nationwide.

“The birth of the Ford Shelby GT was so well received last year, especially by young enthusiasts, that we brought the car back for the 2008 model year,” said Amy Boylan, President of Shelby Automobiles. “The enormous response to Hertz’s Shelby GT-H convertible convinced us to offer customers a drop top Shelby GT. And we had so many requests for blue that we decided to make it our signature color in 2008.”

Every Shelby GT is built to perform and is the result of extensive development. Aerodynamics were key to sculpting t he powerful, unique front fascia with an aggressive lower air dam. The hood scoop comes directly from the famed Shelby Cobra roadster while unique side scoops are positioned just before the rear wheel arches. The rear fascia frames dual exhaust tips, and a Shelby badge graces the trunk lid.

“The partnership between Ford Racing and Shelby demonstrates our ability to work together to deliver some of the most exciting Mustang’s ever built,” said Jamie Allison, Ford Racing Performance Group Manager. “Ford Racing has a full line of performance parts for Mustang enthusiasts. The Shelby GT convertible is another example of how working together, Shelby and Ford Racing are developing, producing and delivering niche performance Mustangs directly to the customer.”

Under the hood, the engine is improved with a Ford Racing Power Upgrade Package to increase output of the 4.6-liter V-8 to 319 horsepower and 330 lb.-ft. of torque. A high-flow exhaust system with X-pipe crossover offers better power delivery and a throaty V-8 exhaust note. Shelby GT comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission featuring a Hurst short-throw shifter for precise shift action. A five-speed automatic transmission is optional.The balanced package includes a Ford Racing Handling Pack with special-tuned dampers, unique sway bars and a 3.55:1 ratio rear axle assembly for improved off-the-line acceleration. The overall ride height was dropped to reduce body roll while a front strut-tower brace adds additional strength to the chassis structure.

The 2008 models will sport 18-inch polished wheels with high-performance P235/50ZR18 BF Goodrich gForce tires to maximize the upgrades. Like all Mustang convertibles, each drop top will have a stylish light bar and supplemental bracing to give the car additional stiffness.

“The Shelby GT is for drivers,” says Boylan. “We enhanced the motor, the chassis and other bits to make it a fun, balanced car that is equally at home on the street or track. It’s easy to drive, very fast and offers great value for the price.”

Approximately 2,300 Shelby GT coupes and convertibles will be built for model year 2008, available with manual or automatic transmission. Each car will feature an authentication plate on the center dashboard, as well as a matching tag under the hood for documentation in a forthcoming registry. Shelby Automobiles production is scheduled to begin in August 2007.

Caterham Seven X330 Review

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Caterham has unveiled the most powerful Seven ever; the X330 – a one-off supercharged model boasting a mind-boggling power-to-weight ratio of 600bhp per tonne.

The stealthy, matt black concept is based around the range-topping CSR Superlight, but the addition of a supercharger to the four-cylinder 2.3 litre Ford Duratec engine increases power massively from 260 to 330bhp – as the name suggests.

That means the X330’s equivalent power-to-weight ratio puts it ahead of the Bugatti Veyron (521bhp per tonne) and the McLaren F1 (559bhp).

The near 35% power hike is achieved by a Rotrex C30-94 supercharger, which provides a boost characteristic that rises linearly with engine speed. In other words, although the X330’s punch is greater at higher revs and speed, low-speed driveability isn't compromised thanks to an exceptional torque curve with over 221 lb-ft from 5500 to 7500rpm – 20 lb-ft more than the CSR260.As the X330 is an engineering test bed it is envisaged that some of the concepts will eventually find their way into production. To begin with the X330 will spearhead the British firm’s R&D into bioethanol power in the coming months as it seeks to assess the viability of alternative fuel sources in road and race applications and cement a further 50 years of history for the legendary Seven.

In keeping with the Seven ethos of ‘adding lightness’, the extremity of the X330 doesn’t stop at moving parts. Lighter gauge steel is used in the trellis-style chassis and the use of new lightweight wheels together with an abundant use of carbon fibre for the bodywork all adds to the stealth appearance of this perfect 50th birthday present.

Ford Focus RS Wins Greece Review

Ford claimed its 60th event win in the FIA World Rally Championship in Athens today to extend its lead in both the drivers' and manufacturers' standings in the 2007 series. Marcus Grönholm and Timo Rautiainen won the four-day Acropolis Rally of Greece in a Ford Focus RS World Rally Car, their second straight win and third of the season. Team-mates Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen finished fourth in another Focus RS.

The Acropolis is the toughest round of the 16-event championship and this was the sixth victory in eight years here for the Focus RS. It was Grönholm's 28th WRC victory and as the series heads into a summer break after eight rounds, the 39-year-old Finn has increased his lead in the drivers' series to nine points. Reigning world champion BP-Ford World Rally Team now heads the manufacturers' standings by 28 points.

Rocky tracks and intense heat are the trademarks of the Acropolis and success here demanded strength and reliability from the Focus RS and BFGoodrich's tyres, as well as outright speed. Grönholm's car displayed all three as he took the lead during Friday's opening leg and was never again headed. He stamped his authority on the event by winning both passes through the marathon 48.88km Agii Theodori speed test yesterday, the longest and most difficult of the season to date.Having built a 43.3sec lead by last night, Grönholm paced himself through today's final five special stages covering 78.94km to win by 38.6sec after 334.44km of competition. "I had a good rally with no problems and it's a huge confidence boost to take two wins before the summer break," he said. "The rough roads and high temperatures ensured it was a hard rally for cars and tyres but both were perfect all rally. Today I was able to match my speed to Loeb's split times and I felt comfortable throughout.

"It's fantastic to go into summer with a nine-point lead in the drivers' championship and a big lead for the team. I can enjoy the holiday now! We're able to fight with Loeb, and maybe he's not so comfortable any more, but I know that the second half of the year won't be easy with four events on asphalt – his favourite surface," added Grönholm.

BP-Ford team-mate Hirvonen was in the midst of a fierce six-car battle throughout the opening leg, which ended with all six being covered by less than 11sec. Despite going off the road and later puncturing, Hirvonen maintained his position throughout the second and third legs and was able to drive cautiously through the final day.

"Today was easy because I just paced myself to the finish," said the 26-year-old Finn. "I had a good position on Friday and felt able to fight for a win but on Saturday morning I went off the road. A podium was gone but we still took good points. That crash was the worst moment of my year so far but I recovered and I'm pleased to finish. It was a tough event, but that's what is expected of the Acropolis Rally. That's why it is one of the season's classics."

BP-Ford team director Malcolm Wilson celebrated the team's second win in three weekends and said: "The two passes over the long stage yesterday were the key to this event. Marcus didn't attack but his strategy was to avoid trouble on both occasions and his success at doing that while others hit problems was what won this rally. Two wins in two rallies take us into the summer break in the lead of both championships and I'm confident we can consolidate that in the second half," he said.Jost Capito, director of Ford TeamRS, said: "The Greek Gods looked after us again this weekend! We've reached the halfway point in the season in a strong position in both the manufacturers' and drivers' championships. We debut the 2007-specification Focus RS WRC on the next round in Finland in August and I'm confident this will take us another step forward."

After surviving yesterday's demanding leg, competitors' thoughts were simply on reaching this afternoon's finish and there were no changes to the leaderboard. The only battle came for the final manufacturers' point, Luis Perez Companc (Ford) holding off Jari-Matti Latvala (Ford) to score the first championship point for the Munchi's Ford World Rally Team.

With the championship at the midway point, the action stops for a summer break. It resumes with round nine, Rally Finland, which is based in Jyväskylä on 2-5 August.

The concept's 3.5-liter gasoline twin-turbocharged direct-injection V-6 performs comparably or better than V-8 engines, delivering 415 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque on renewable E-85 ethanol.

A New Era of Lincoln Design
The new design " created by a team led by Peter Horbury, executive director, Design, The Americas " showcases the visual elements that will influence a new generation of Lincoln products.

We've reinterpreted the best of Lincoln designs over time, preserving the restraint and elegance synonymous with the brand, says Horbury. The Lincoln MKR concept is sophisticated and modern, resembling an athlete " extremely strong and fit but looks elegant in a tuxedo.This romantic, sporting coupe should turn heads at the show. And, ultimately, this new design language will help lead us forward in the growing premium segment.

The Lincoln MKR concept features seven key exterior cues, which define modern Lincoln design:

Clean, uncluttered surfaces
Powerful, dynamic beltline
Chamfered surface running parallel to the beltline
Distinctive Lincoln bow-wave, double-wing grille opening
Thin, horizontal taillamps that run from one side to the other
Significant C-pillar smoothly transitioning into the cantilevered roof, and
Powerful cantrail/roofrail

Three or four of these design elements are likely to appear on future production Lincolns, including the concept's most dramatic feature: the double-wing grille inspired by the 1941 Lincoln Continental Cabriolet. The split grille is designed to resemble the bow of a boat cutting through the water, giving the oversize Lincoln star a proper home on which to stand proud.

The Lincoln MKR concept's four doors and body side remain characteristically clean. A button concealed in the chrome door trim springs open the four ˜winged' doors, slightly inclined for additional sophistication and a touch of drama.

From the rear, the coupe concept is instantly recognizable as a Lincoln, thanks to full-width LED taillamps stretching from side to side.

From above, this Lincoln proudly showcases its brand heritage with a large structural Lincoln star that punctuates the glass roof spanning the top of the car.

Modern, ˜Guilt-free' Luxury Touches
Inside, the Lincoln MKR concept defines a new direction for modern luxury, with ambient lighting and contrasting colors and materials that offer both a new look and philosophy for future Lincoln interiors.

The concept's interior builds on the success of earlier Lincolns but stretches the boundaries even further, said Gordon Platto, chief designer of the Lincoln MKR concept. This unique combination of materials gives the Lincoln MKR a rich interior but features the environmentally friendly amenities that luxury buyers expect in premium goods, including vehicles.

A black oak instrument panel engineered from recycled wood stretches from side to side and carries through to a twin-level floating center console that extends into the rear of the cabin.

This expansive ˜T-shaped' panel houses the passenger information display system seamlessly disguised by the flush touch screen control surfaces and a navigation screen that can be concealed by a powered door.

The instrument cluster provides a jewelry-like focal point. Chrome-trimmed gauges illuminated with Ice Blue lighting can be easily viewed in harmony with the concave spoke steering wheel that includes retractable paddle shifters.

Lighting is an important design element, Platto said. We know customers are paying more attention to the lighting in their homes than ever before, and we wanted to leverage it to create even more ambiance and drama inside the concept.

Ice Blue lighting is carried throughout the high-contrast interior, emitting from the door panels, mohair-carpeted foot wells, seats, center console and perhaps most dramatically from the large Lincoln star above which is easily viewed from each of the Lincoln MKR concept's four seats.

Each soy-foam based seat stands alone, looking as if suspended in air, wrapped in a creamy cashmere leather made through a more environmentally friendly chromium-free process. Seatbacks are finished with high-gloss, ceramic-looking shells.

The concept also features the THX II Certified Car Audio System, Lincoln's signature audio system, which produces sound quality comparable to home theater systems.

Innovative TwinForce Powertrain
Under the Lincoln MKR's sculpted hood is the exquisitely detailed TwinForce engine, finished in chrome and accented in the cranberry red metallic paint that dresses the rest of the modern exterior.

This marks the birth of the new TwinForce engine family that will power production versions of a range of future Ford and Lincoln products.

TwinForce uses direct injection technology and turbocharging. These technologies are common in diesel engines but have only recently been combined together in gasoline engines.

The Lincoln MKR's engine also is flex fuel capable, providing the driver with the flexibility to switch back and forth between gasoline and E-85 ethanol. Combining the high octane found in E-85 or premium gasoline with TwinForce technology allows the MKR's V-6 to deliver 415 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque " an impressive 118 horsepower per liter.

To achieve this type of performance from a V-8 would require an engine displacement of 6.0-liter or larger, nearly double the size of the 3.5-liter in the Lincoln MKR. As a result of the smaller V-6, the Lincoln MKR concept delivers 15 percent better fuel economy than a V-8 with similar performance.

The concept's engine is mated to a six-speed transmission, and the concept features independent rear suspension for more refined road manners.

The car sits on 21-inch chrome aluminum wheels fitted with unique Michelin tires that feature the Lincoln star in its treads.

The Lincoln MKR concept is important because it marks a new era for the brand, Horbury said. This is a showcase of modern design that marries power, performance and, essentially, ˜guilt-free' luxury.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Silver Review

Rolls-Royce has produced a limited edition, named Phantom Silver, to mark the 100 th anniversary of the Silver Ghost. The special model, of which only 25 will be made, pays homage to one of the most famous automotive names of all time.

First built in 1906, specifically to publicise the then new Rolls-Royce 40/50 h.p. six-cylinder model, the Silver Ghost established the Rolls-Royce reputation for reliability and engineering excellence. The name was coined in 1907 by Rolls-Royce Managing Director, Claude Johnson, by virtue of its silver coachwork and its ‘extraordinary stealthiness’. The original Silver Ghost, registered AX-201, competed in the 1907 Scottish Reliability Trial, for which it won the gold medal in its class for hill climbing speed and reliability. The Silver Ghost went on in that year to break the world record for a non-stop motor run, covering a London to Glasgow route 27 times, with mileage totaling 14,371 miles.

More than 6,000 “Silver Ghosts” were built between 1907 and 1925, and sold in every corner of the world. The majority are still in good running order.



In tribute to the specifications of the original, the Phantom Silver is finished in a new Bespoke paint, Metallic Ghost Silver. The 21-inch wheels have chrome centres and on top of the grille sits a hallmarked solid silver Spirit of Ecstasy. Inside, Rose Leaf or Crème Light leather is accompanied by seat piping and headrests embroidered with the Rolls-Royce interlinked RR badge. Straight grained Santos Palissander wood veneer is used throughout. The same veneer is also used on a specially designed presentation box that houses the key, two solid silver key fobs and a specially commissioned solid silver Conway Stewart fountain pen.
Rolls-Royce Chairman and Chief Executive, Ian Robertson, said, “The Silver Ghost is such a significant model in the history of Rolls-Royce that we felt marking its 100 th anniversary was entirely fitting. Its extraordinary reliability, refinement, comfort and virtually silent running were as important to Rolls-Royce in 1907 as they are today.”

We look into the future in order to be ready and resourceful when faced by new environment challenges and alternative sources of energy; Fioravanti introduces the Thalia. This concept car is the result of research and development for a vehicle that allows to stock up he most recent eco-friendly energies and to combine innovation with elegance.

We began by raising the rear sitting thus creating room for hydrogen tanks, for a “fuel cell” car or for possible batteries in the case an electric or hybrid engine. These large masses would be placed in a well protected area, safe from crashes and low for an ideal centre of gravity to improve the car handling.

In recent year, despite the fast growing number of M.P.V., S.U.V., COSSOVER models, the problem of poor visibility for the rear passengers is still unresolved; their desire to enjoy a clear view has yet to be fulfilled.

By blending all technical and architectural aspects, our inside space has been reshaped, the rear seats are about 30 cm higher then the front ones, therefore they will be experiencing a “front row” journey. We have also maintained the driving experience for driver and front passenger with more reclined and sporty
but comfortable seats.
A sleek and dynamic design characterizes the unique bodywork with modelled and plastic surfaces, in the vehicle’s front end we find the lights, which are luminous volumes that vary their intensity depending on functions, creating a single drawing.

At the rear we have fitted various functions: to improve the aerodynamic the side mirrors have been replaced by video cameras fitted on the spoiler, the reverse gear light, anti fog light, windshield wiper are integrated in a single distinctive asymmetrical element that includes the rear door-handle too.

A vertically developed boot of generous dimensions allows big load-carrying.

Volkswagen EOS Coupe Cabriolet Review

The Eos Individual is based on the Sport trim, and benefits from unique interior and exterior styling touches. With sports suspension, 18-inch ‘Chicago’ alloy wheels and bespoke leather upholstery it offers buyers a distinctive package and lends extra style to the Eos’s already head-turning looks.

Lowered and stiffened suspension gives the Individual a more purposeful stance and sharper responses. The car’s appearance is complemented by the unique wheels and a selection of four exterior paint colours – Paprika Red, Deep Black pearl effect, Midnight Blue metallic and Island Grey.

Rich two-tone black and cream coloured leather seats finished in contrasting piping lend the new Eos Individual’s interior a distinctive look and feel. The cream leather extends to the door inserts and is contrasted against piano black inserts that continue into the dashboard and centre console. The black leather three-spoke steering wheel features cream stitching.

Standard equipment on the new Eos Individual exceeds the already comprehensive list fitted to the Eos Sport. Advanced 2Zone electronic climate control, two-tone leather trim with heated front seats, piano black inserts and 18-inch alloy wheels are joined by unique ‘Individual’ sill plates. This is in addition to six airbags, ABS and ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) which also come as standard.

Powering the Eos Individual are a choice of 2.0-litre TDI 140 PS diesel, 2.0-litre T-FSI 200 PS and 3.2-litre V6 FSI 250 PS petrol engines. The advanced six-speed DSG gearbox is fitted as standard on the V6 model and offered as an option on the 2.0-litre diesel and petrol engines.

As with the standard vehicle, the Eos Individual is fitted with an advanced, five-piece glass and metal folding roof that stows neatly into the boot at the touch of a button. The whole operation takes only 25 seconds. The roof also incorporates a sunroof.

The new Eos Individual can be ordered from Volkswagen Retailers now, with the first UK deliveries set to start in August. Prices start at £24,747 (RRP OTR) for the Eos Individual 2.0-litre TDI 140 PS, rising to £29,527 for the range-topping 3.2-litre V6 FSI 250 PS model fitted with a DSG gearbox.

Scion tC Pricing Review

Scion has announced pricing for the 2008 tC sports coupe and tC Spec Package models. The 2008 tC and tC Spec Package will be available at dealerships next month.

The core model tC receives freshened styling, new standard equipment and safety features for 2008. Exterior changes include a new upper mesh grille, lattice lower grille, projector-type low beam headlights with black trim, and rear tail lights similar in style to the tC's headlights with round combination lamps. The tC also receives a deep orange combination meter on the instrument panel, silver-colored accents on the door assist grips and center cluster, updated seat fabric and a Pioneer subwoofer located under the cargo area.

Like all 2008 Scion models, the tC comes standard with seat-mounted side airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags, and two complimentary factory-recommended maintenance services, at 5,000 and 10,000 miles, at any Scion or Toyota dealer. The factory recommended maintenance includes an oil change, a tire rotation, a visual brake inspection, and the topping off of washer fluid.Apple iPod connectivity becomes standard on all 2008 Scion models. Scion's standard 160-watt maximum output Pioneer AM/FM/CD audio system features a head unit with iPod control. This head unit integrates track, artist and album information from the iPod into a one-line display on the head unit's screen. Connectivity is achieved by simply plugging the iPod into a port via a connector cable, providing outstanding sound quality through the car's stereo system and constant power to the iPod. Music is controlled through the head unit, steering wheel audio controls or iPod. A standard mini-jack port also allows users to listen to their portable music collection through the tC's Pioneer speakers.

Scion also offers a Pioneer Premium audio system that adds the ability to download “skins” to play on the organic electroluminescent (OEL) faceplate. Customers can download images, four-second video clips and eight-second movies from Pioneer's website. Pioneer software also allows customers to burn their own images and movies onto a CD and upload them onto the available head unit. The Premium audio system also has head unit outputs on the rear for the addition of external amps.

New to the accessory line up for the 2008 model year is the Scion navigation system. The system features a 160-watt maximum power audio/video/navigation unit with seven-inch LCD touch screen.

The tC Spec Package model, a blank canvas for the tuner community to express its creativity, also receives the grille, deep orange combination meter and silver-colored interior accents in addition to the new airbags and iPod connectivity across the Scion line-up.The tC Spec Package will have a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $15,300 for a manual transmission and $16,100 for an automatic transmission, an increase of $300, or 2.0 percent and 1.9 percent respectively. With the additional standard equipment, the base MSRP for the core model tC is $17,000 for the manual transmission and $17,800 for the automatic transmission, an increase of $600, or 3.7 percent and 3.5 percent respectively. MSRP does not include delivery, processing and handling fees, which vary depending on location.

At the 2007 Geneva Motor Show, MAGNA STEYR is presenting MILA Future, an automotive sculpture that is reduced to a forward-looking design and fully functional roof system. This unique system can be used to show four different roof configurations on one vehicle - a world first. If a roadster has a retractable hard top (RHT), its back does not usually lend itself to classic coupé lines. When the roof is closed, the trunk volume is generally satisfactory, but when open the storage space may be reduced by up to half. Many of the retractable tops common today require a rear deck cover that opens in the opposite direction to travel to accommodate the roof - making additional motors necessary. MILA Future offers a variety of innovative ideas and demonstrates the development team's creative potential at MAGNA STEYR and MAGNA Car Top Systems in a number of interesting details.

MILA Future: the world is adaptable, but always open - four variants in one vehicle

MILA Future coupé:

A characteristic of classic coupés is the flowing silhouette towards the rear. It gives the vehicle an elegant, dynamic appearance that the target group on the market regards as its distinctive feature. In addition to attractive styling, other benefits include fully utilizable trunk volume and protection against wind and weather for the passengers.

MILA Future landaulet:

Landaulets were horse-drawn carriages that had double soft folding tops for driving half open. Thanks to the special design of roof, deck lid and rear window, the Mila Future can be driven in a similarly romantic mode - the rear window is lowered completely, but the roof itself remains in place over the passengers protecting them against direct sunlight. On country roads you therefore feel in touch with your surroundings and if driving faster the airflow is reduced to a pleasant level.

MILA Future roadster:

When the roof is down and the rear window lowered, you can experience real roadster feeling. Compared with conventional solutions, however, the remaining trunk space is 20% larger. This additional volume is created by leaving the B and C pillars on the deck lid as styling elements, which means that the space is not required in the trunk area. The result is a new, exciting appearance and makes this type of vehicle unmistakable on the roads. At the same time, it provides adequate rollover protection - so the typical bars behind the seats are not required.

MILA Future copster:











A combination of coupé and roadster, this variant keeps the roof in the trunk with the rear window in the coupé position. It also serves as a permanent wind deflector and does not require manual mounting. This configuration gives you a sense of safety in the interior without having to sacrifice the open-air feeling.

Engineering: convenience is key

The technology used is based on a two-part retractable top where one part consists as usual of the roof and the second of the deck lid. Integrated in it are the movable rear window and the rollover protection. The complete unit is opened with a sturdy pivot hinge, which has the pivot points in the upper part of the B pillar attached to the body. The hydraulic cylinders and all the suspension links are located inside the B pillar. All you have to do is press a button to open the deck lid in the direction of travel for configuring the vehicle as a roadster or for loading. Only one mechanism is therefore required for both functions. The roof is opened with a hydraulically operated pivot hinge and moves horizontally under the raised deck lid and into the trunk to save space. After the deck lid is closed, the rear window and rigid B and C pillars remain outside, thus increasing the available trunk volume. Finally, an electric motor moves the rear window down to the lowest level - and the roadster position is reached. The longitudinal anti-roll bar with its fixed side windows gives the roadster its inimitable look.

The rear window itself can be moved to any position required without the roof motor and can act as a wind deflector if necessary. When loading, a button on the vehicle exterior opens the deck lid hydraulically and the retracted roof can automatically be raised 45 degrees for more convenient luggage storage.

Since the ladies are always important to us, another creative detail is the "purse hatch" from the driver's seat. In addition, the backs of the two seats can both be folded forwards individually and the sliding doors moved into the rear wall. As a result, smaller items can also be stowed in the trunk without any trouble.

The system can be adapted to all two-seater coupés or roadsters. Its neutral styling means that the MILA Future sculpture leaves ample scope for OEMs to design various vehicle models of their own.

1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso

As one of Hollywood's original--and most legitimate--car guys, Steve McQueen needs no introduction. But in case you've forgotten, his movies often involved cars and motorcycles, and he drove and rode in many of his own stunts. He was the epicenter of the most iconic car-chase ever filmed ("Bullitt," 1968), and he was committed to creating the best racing movie ever filmed ("Le Mans," 1971)--and arguably pulled that off, too. He also had fabulous taste in cars.

McQueen's first acting dollars, earned in the 1950s, bought him an MG. He soon graduated to Porsches. A Siata 208S. One of the 16 1957 Jaguar XK-SSs built. A 289 Cobra. He owned at least one of the Mustangs that appeared in "Bullitt," plus the Porsche 917 and that gorgeous, gray 1969 911S he drove in "Le Mans." Over the years, there were farm trucks, a Hudson Hornet, a Winton Flyer, an old Packard, numerous airplanes, and too many motorcycles to count. And there were Ferraris. Including this 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso, his first.

As a precursor to Steve's 34th birthday, which would take place March 24, 1964, his wife Neile bought a Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso, serial number 4891, from Otto Zipper Motors in Santa Monica, California, via Luigi Chinetti in New York. Chinetti was the North American importer of Ferraris. The car was ordered in a medium-brown metallic hue called Marrone, with a beige interior--an odd, yet elegant, color combination, as Lussos are so often seen in red, silver, or black. According to Mrs. McQueen, the car was delivered to their Hollywood Hills home to join the aforementioned Jaguar XK-SS, a black Porsche Speedster, a Cadillac, her Porsche 911, and the ever-present bikes.

The Lusso quickly became a favorite for high-speed road trips. Noted pop-culture photographer William Claxton, former Motor Trend art director and a close friend of Steve's, relates a trip taken a week or so after the McQueens got the car. According to Claxton, Steve and Neile invited Claxton and his wife Peggy for a getaway. Their route took them from Los Angeles to Big Sur, Carmel, Monterey, then through San Francisco, Reno, Lake Tahoe, Death Valley, and back to Southern California.

Says Claxton: "We would set a place to meet for lunch and then take off, Steve in the Lusso and me in my Porsche 356 SC 1600. Steve's idea of fun was to go roaring off and, a couple hours later, be parked at the side of the road pretending to be bored waiting for us to arrive. It was a great time. He really loved that car."

FAB DESIGN Mercedes-Benz CL 600 Upgrade Review

Attractive bodywork design in optimal harmony of forms: FAB - DESIGN makes the new Mercedes CL-class even more exciting. Simply enough is never enough: This is the motto behind FAB DESIGN's extensive refinement treatment of the grand Mercedes coupe. The new wide body aerodynamic programm fits in harmony into the entire picture and gives the vehicule a more sporty appearance.

The FAB DESIGN wide body front bumper forms a unit with the new wide front fenders and takes up the line guidance at the new CL. A big opening placed in the middle provides a lot of fresh air for the coolers. The left and right side intakes serve a lot of cooling for the brakes. Despite the enlargement of the fender the harmony and elegance of the basic CL is fully preserved. The front fender sideopenings behind the salient enlargements act as an additional cooling element. The lightly overstanding sideskirts at the door bottom edge, make the CL look not only sporty but also dynamical and stylish. The sporty and dynamic looking rear fender with the intakes provides a lot of ventilation for a sufficent cooling of the rear brake system.

The sophisticated and unique design of the rear bumper convert the CL next to the efficent aerodynamic also a breath taking optic. The shape of the lower section of the rear bumper produces an excellent downforce value.

The new shape of the four integrated slightly horizontal placed exhaust endpipes, is just another way to reflect the unique way of FAB DESIGN inspiration.

FAB DESIGN goes own ways also for the light alloy wheel. The 3-pces forged FAB DESIGN type 6 EVOLINE wheel fascinates through its own and athletically optic. The aluminium wheels look through the low bed particularly big, the wheels are completely painted in the car color (titanium brilliant grey). The visible chromed screws look technical and give a sporty finish. The front axle is fitted with wheels in dimensions of 10J x 20, the rear axle even with 12J x 20 inch. Dunlop Sportmax tires in the dimensions of 255/30 ZR 20 for the front axle and 305/25 ZR 20 for the rear axle, providing sufficient "Grip" by all speeds. Combined with the modificated suspension results in an indescribable curvening pleasure without influencing negatively the straight run.













The interior is another new way from FAB DESIGN. The complete interior is in light beige FAB DESIGN leather/alcantara and the middle sections of the seats in FAB DESIGN crocolook light brown. This crocolook imitation is made of genuine car leather and respects all the required norms. The new developed FAB DESIGN sport seats in the front give to the interior a very luxury and sporty touch.The performance: the engineers from FAB DESIGN have developed a costly conversion that upgrades the performance of the V12 Biturbo to 650 PS and the torque to fabulous 1120 Newtonmeter. In the FAB DESIGN S60 BT performance kit only strengthen or new constructed parts are used, which in spite of high strain guarantee a long life duration, as they are usualy in the (OEM) set. The mechanic and electronic of the gear unit belongs also to the extend of the upgraded performance package as well as the power of the adaptation of the brakesystem.

Fuel Vapor Ale 3 Wheeler Review

The “alé” features a unique 3-wheeled configuration: 2 in the front, and one in the rear. The front wheels drive and steer the vehicle. This design enables the car to perform at a superb level, particularly in cornering, with the car easily pulling 1.7 g’s in corners during track testing on street tires. The three-wheeled automotive platform also aid in improving fuel efficiency and aerodynamics.

Vapor system:
The car’s key innovation's are the fuel vapor system and it's light weight aerodynamic body. This fuel vapor technology (which is in the patent pending process) allows the engine to run on “fuel vapors” rather than liquid fuel. The majority of gas engines today run 14.7:1 – (14.7 parts air to 1 part gasoline). This proprietary fuel vapor system allows the “alé” to run on a ratio of over 20:1 without compromising performance. According to the textbooks, this ratio is impossible, as a standard engine would not start or run on a air/fuel ratio this low. With a 10 gallon gas tank found on most vehicles, the “alé” can travel from Vancouver BC to San Francisco CA on one tank. Over 15 hours of driving without filling up.

Performance:
Not only does the “alé” have extreme mileage capabilities, but its performance is outstanding and better than many high-end sports cars. It accelerates from 0-60 in 5 seconds, and will pull over 1.7 g’s in hard corner's on street tires. Brad Zimmerman, head tech for the company stated during testing at the Mission race track, “I drove it hard for 4 solid hours, throwing it into corners, accelerating and braking hard. The car’s performance is spectacular. After all that hard driving, we only went through $10 in gas.”

Emissions:
The “alé” runs on regular gasoline, and easily achieves the level of “super low” emissions with a 30% reduction in CO2. Even more impressive is the fact that all the data to date has been gathered without a catalytic converter.

The Future:
This is the first time the public have had a chance to view the “alé”. The company is currently seeking investors to take the “alé” into production.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X Review

Mitsubishi Motors in Japan revealed an exterior image of the production version of the Lancer Evolution high performance sedan. The image, released in conjunction with a financial results announcement, reveals the subtle exterior details of the forthcoming production model, whose styling direction was first suggested with Concept X (2005 Tokyo Motor Show) and later reinforced with Prototype X (2007 NAIAS). The soon-to-market Lancer Evolution represents the zenith of the Lancer badge's performance development; a rally racing story that began over 30 years ago in the deserts of the Safari Rally, later saw dominance on the WRC stage in the 1990's, and now combines the lessons from competition with high technology to bring an enthusiasts' hero to the streets.

The development concept for the all-new Lancer Evolution¹ specifies a "next-generation high-performance 4WD global sedan that allows all levels of driver to enjoy the car's speed and handling with ease and in safety". The new model features Mitsubishi's S-AWC² traction and handling system. This advanced all-wheel-drive system integrates a superior level of drive torque distribution and braking management, making this the best handling Lancer Evolution vehicle of the series.This technology when mated to the new, more rigid Lancer platform results in a Lancer Evolution that is highly responsive, offering intuitive handling and a greater degree of control in addition to outstanding vehicle attitude stability. Other examples of Mitsubishi Motors' latest automotive technology to be featured in the new model include a new lightweight, high-performance 2.0-liter turbocharged MIVEC3 engine with aluminum cylinder block and a 6-speed automated manual transmission that contributes to vehicle's exceptional performance while offering improved fuel economy.
